As of the beginning of this year almost 45 million adults - close to 90% of the UK adult population - are using the internet in some form, according to the Office for National Statistics. Web use has now become such a fundamental part of our everyday lives that choosing the right internet provider and package is becoming increasingly essential.

Whether you are moving home, installing broadband for the first time or just thinking about changing your current package or provider, there are several key factors to consider.

Of course most people will be looking for the cheapest broadband deal available but how much you pay will depend on things like speed, download allowances and contract length (with TenTel you won’t need a contract, read about our no contract broadband here).

To determine what kind of package or provider to go for you will need to assess what type of internet user you are. Are you an email checker and Facebook browser? Are you a YouTube watcher and online shopper? Or are you a serial downloader and HD series watcher?

For light users a download allowance of 2GB will be sufficient, if you do a bit more than browsing, the next step up would be something nearer a 10GB limit. If you’re downloading music, videos and films you may need to take a step up to something like a 50GB package and if you are a heavy internet user and don’t want to worry about going over your download limit, an unlimited package might be the best for you.

Once you have worked out what package will suit, depending where you live, you may need to find out what broadband packages are available in your area. If you live in a city or town the likelihood is that any service provider and type of broadband will be available to you but if you live in a rural location you will need to check with your preferred internet service provider to see if they service your area.

If you are already in a contract, a recent ruling by Ofcom has provided something else to consider. The consumer watchdog ruled that consumers can now cancel their existing contract for freeif their prices have increased. So bearing in mind BT, Sky, Virgin and Talk Talk’s recent price rises, our exclusive guarantee to beat the big four’s pricesnow sounds better than ever.
