A London letting agent has come under attack after apparently giving a tenant permission to put up a new wall in a flat – with the landlord knowing nothing about it.
The Docklands & East London Advertiser describes how Glenn Jarman let his property in Canary Wharf through estate agents Atkinson Mcleod.
Unbeknown to him, the tenant secured permission to put up a wall in the living room to create another bedroom in the flat in Boardwalk Place.
“I found out because the tenant had also rented out the parking space,” Jarman told the Advertiser, “I confronted the tenant and he said ‘I thought you knew. You know about the partition wall, don’t you?’
“I was expecting to give him a slap on the wrist about the parking space.”
Jarman was furious when he found out that the tenant had written permission from Atkinson Mcleod to erect the wall.
“He has got an email from the letting agent saying ‘yes it’s ok to partition’. From his point of view he got something black and white from the letting agent saying it’s fine,” says Jarman. “I want them to make amends. I think what they have done is absolutely shocking.
According to the Advertiser, Atkinson Mcleod brushed off enquiries from the newspaper saying the agent in question left the company eight months ago.
