Two men responsible for an unlicensed multiple-occupancy house have been prosecuted by Leicester magistrates.
Hasmukh Tailor, 50, of the Broadway, Oadby, and Dilesh Thakrar, 46, of Jalaram Estates, which trades from Egginton Street, Highfields, both pleaded guilty to operating a house in multiple occupation (HMO) which had not been licensed with Leicester City Council.
The court heard how checks done by a city council environmental health officer on a property they owned at 82 Kimberley Road, Stoneygate, revealed it was not properly licensed as an HMO. It came to light during investigations following a fire at a neighbouring student property in February 2013.
At court on 28 March Tailor was fined £300, with £800 prosecution costs, and ordered to pay a £30 victim surcharge. Thakrar was fined £150, with £350 costs, and a £20 victim surcharge.
The prosecution means that the tenants who were living there at the time can apply for a rent repayment order against the landlords.
Assistant city mayor for neighbourhood services, Cllr Sarah Russell, said: "Proper licensing arrangements for HMOs are there to ensure the safety of all tenants, and cases like this show that we take seriously our responsibilities in ensuring landlords comply."
