Landlords in Ipswich have lost out on an estimated £50,000 after a letting agent shut up shop.

The East Anglian Daily Times reported that police are still investigating alleged fraud at Suffolk Lettings in St Peter’s Street in Ipswich.

The office closed down in December 2012 and about 30 landlords have reported not receiving money owed to them for renting out their premises.

Landlords reported not being able to contact the company. The company website is down while calls to the company’s published number by Landlord Today went unanswered. Another unconnected business has subsequently opened up at the same premises.

The police inquiry began in January last year when officers were contacted by one of the landlords. Suffolk Constabulary said the investigation encompassed 48 properties.

Lisa Miller, a spokeswoman for Suffolk Constabulary, told the EADT: “Suffolk police received a report in January 2013 from a person claiming that they had been a victim of fraud.

“The allegation was against a company which had been based in St Peter’s Street, Ipswich. After the initial report, Suffolk police received further allegations of a similar nature against the company. Enquiries are continuing.”

Anyone with information which could help the inquiry should telephone Detective Constable Donna Whelan-Smith at Suffolk Constabulary on 101 quoting crime reference IE/13/217.

Alternatively they can contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 55511.
