Access to the internet via fast, reliable broadband has become so integral to our daily lives, but what do we really know about the scale of its usage? We have broken down the key figures to take a look at the digital revolution, and there are some pretty big numbers!

3 billion

Back in 1995, less than 1% of the world’s population had an internet connection. Now, that figure is about 40%. As of July 2014, there were nearly 3 billion internet users worldwide, highlighting the staggering growth seen over the last two decades.

22.6 million

In 2014, the number of fixed residential and SME broadband connections in the UK stood at 22.6 million, up by nearly 1 million from 2013, a figure that is increasing every year. Despite the overwhelming growth of mobile internet access in recent years, this shows the value still placed on fixed internet access by households and businesses up and down the country.

6.1 million

People have come to expect much more from their broadband, with 78% of properties in the UK now able to receive superfast broadband and 6.1 million opting for this type of package. With internet usage on the up and slowness and buffering no longer being tolerated, speedy, uninterrupted coverage is increasingly being considered as a given. Streaming services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime and BBC iPlayer are becoming ever more popular, more people are working from home than at any other time, and businesses from every sector are recognising the increasing need to be switched on at all times. Immediacy and efficiency are now the order of the day.

23 million

47% of the UK population, equivalent to roughly just over 30 million, uses social networking sites, further underlining the growing influence of this means of communication. Twitter, Facebook and Instagram have become so popular they are now ingrained in British culture, with social media appearing to be more than the short-lived fad it was originally predicted to be. More and more people are liking, sharing, tweeting, ‘DMing’ and posting selfie after selfie – a great deal of the population, particularly teenagers, are living a big part of their lives online.

28 million

Smartphones, too, have undoubtedly enhanced the reach of the internet as many ‘log-on’ while on the move. Around 28 million people, 57% of UK adults, use their mobile handset to access the internet, a figure that has been massively boosted by the emergence of iPhones and Androids in the last six or seven years.

36 hours and 49 minutes

Clocking in at over a day and half, this is the average time spent per month browsing online on PCs or laptops. Once again, this reinforces the importance of good internet access and gives a perhaps startling insight in to just how much of our weeks are now spent online.
