A tenant found in possession of drugs initially tried to pin the blame on his landlord.
Police found £2,000 worth of cannabis in the loft of Timothy McComb’s flat in Leeds last July. Leeds Crown Court heard the cannabis was found in ten bags which had McComb’s fingerprints on.
McComb, 37, was arrested a week later at his mother’s home and was found in possession of a small amount of cannabis.
According to a report in the Yorkshire Evening Post, McComb told officers his landlord had ordered him to store cannabis in the loft and had threatened him with violence.
However, McComb was arrested again on February 28 this year at a different address after neighbours reported items thrown from a tower block.
McComb was in possession of a knife and a ballbearing gun when police arrived at the flat and officers had to use a taser to restrain him. He was under the influence of cannabis at the time of the incident and has been in prison on remand since.
He pleaded guilty possession of cannabis with intent to supply, three offences of possessing cannabis, threatening behaviour and criminal damage.
He was made the subject of a 12-month community and drug rehabilitation requirement order. Judge James Spencer, QC, said: “That will give you the encouragement that you will need if you are going to break this drugs habit.”

This is the problem - landlords getting blamed for the criminal activities of the tenants! There seems to be this perception at the moment, in the popular press and elsewhere, that tenants are the exploited innocents while landlords are the devil incarnate.
Stories like this would suggest otherwise.
Yes, this needs to be addressed. There are rogue landlords who give us all a bad name, but there are also nightmare tenants - always has been, always will be. In both cases - rogue landlords and terrible tenants - we are talking about a very small minority of people, but you wouldn't know that from the amount of bad coverage dodgy landlords seem to get.
