Landlord fined over inadequate bathroom fittings

A landlord has been fined £2,750 for failing to carry out a series of repairs to a block of bedsits with shared facilities, after ignoring repeated requests and a visit from council officers.

Alan Filsell of Hailsham was also ordered by Eastbourne Magistrates to pay the Council’s costs of £1,107 and a £120 victim surcharge.

His property in Hailsham, is a mix of bedsits and separate flats and when council officers visited in April 2014 it was home for up to 20 people.

“The owner failed to provide adequate, safe bathroom fittings and manage repairs despite repeated assurances to the council that improvements would be carried out,” says Wealdon council member Graham Wells, cabinet member for Housing and Benefits.

“Under the 2004 Housing Act, the Council has a duty and powers to deal with health and safety hazards in properties. It is important landlords take their responsibility seriously and maintain their properties in a safe and healthy condition. We work with East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service and other partner organisations to ensure that decent safe standards of housing are met in Wealden, and we will prosecute when breaches occur” he says.

Another day another landlord failing to take notice of the relevant laws! Prosecution is key to punish those at fault and clean up the PRS, at the moment landlords are getting bad press when it's only a few who need to clean up their act!
