A landlord in South Gloucestershire has been handed a £500 fine and ordered to pay £600 for six offences relating to the installation of an unsafe log burner in a property that he rented out.

David Jempson, 55, admitted six charges related to building regulations including no carbon dioxide detector, insufficient air supply and an unsafe flue connection.

Due to the severity of the breach of regulations, South Gloucestershire Council opted to prosecute Jempson who was fined £100 for each offence.

This case illustrates the fact that people installing wood burners must obtain building regulations approval when installing wood burners, according to Cllr Colin Hunt, planning, transport and strategic environment lead member on South Gloucestershire Council.

Speaking after the case, he said: “It’s important to contact your local authority to check if your installation requires building regulation permission.

“This investigation involved the collaboration of South Gloucestershire Council’s housing and building control teams and demonstrates our commitment to protect the safety of residents in their homes.”
