Conditional discharge for unlicensed landlord

A landlord has been issued with a conditional discharge by Sheffield Magistrates Court after failing to license two rental properties that he owns.

Simon Nicholls has been ordered to pay fines of £361.48 and a victim surcharge of £15 for failing to respond to the local council’s request to licence his two rental homes, which are located within the selective licensing area in Rotherham.

Nicholls pleaded guilty to failing to comply with the scheme which requires that landlords follow a variety of conditions in order to maintain good property management in the area.

The council’s Cabinet member for housing, Councillor Dominic Beck, said: “Our housing officers tried to help this individual license his property, but the poor response let him down.

“The message is simple - we will not allow irresponsible landlords to persist with their actions indefinitely and will take legal action when landlords fail to license within reasonable timescales.

“This should be a warning to other landlords that if you don’t comply with selective licensing, a court summons will end up on your doormat.”
