Landlord foots £2,000 bill after tenants trash property

A landlord was left with a £2,000 cleaning bill after a group of tenants left his property in a state of ruin.

Neil Carpenter from County Durham had to invest in a deep clean after discovering that a bath had been used as a toilet.

Carpenter said the bathroom smelt 'like death' and that there was also excrement on the walls and rubbish everywhere.

The tenants, who moved out in April 2015, were reportedly a mother and two children.

The landlord remarked that the rental property was in a deteriorating state on a prior visit but escalated severely in the six days that followed before he visited again.

"The smell was just horrendous. The fridge had been moved to block the door in between the kitchen and the bathroom and when you moved that and went into the bathroom you realised that was where the stench was coming from," Carpenter told the Metro.

"It smelled like death. That’s the only way I can describe it."

The landlord sold the property earlier this year, claiming he did not want to face the stress of letting a property again.

A selection of images from the property have been published on the Metro's website.
