Landlords punished for harassing tenant and safety failures

A landlord in Peterborough has been found guilty of harassing a former tenant, while another landlord has been fined for a range of safety failures in Dudley, West Midlands.

Mohammd Yousaf, based in Peterborough, has been issued a community order of 12 months and will need to undertake 160 hours of unpaid work. He was also told to pay a victim compensation fee of £500, on top of £500 costs to Peterborough City Council.

Peterborough Magistrates’ Court was told about various incidents regarding Yousaf, 57, and his tenant, with the landlord having made a number of attempts to enter the property. He was attempting to force the eviction of his tenant, who has a wife and young child, yet was not following the correct process.

In Dudley, Rakesh Sandhi received a fine of £6,400 after pleading guilty to 11 offences involving the breaching of the Housing Act at Dudley Magistrates Court.

The court was informed that the property in question was occupied by five tenants with no hot water, an unclean kitchen and poorly maintained fire doors that would have been ineffective in a blaze.

Strategic director for place directorate at Dudley Council, Alan Lunt, commented: “We have a duty to help protect people in their homes including privately rented accommodation. This case shows that there are serious consequences for landlords who do not provide safe homes for their tenants.”
