Name and shame ‘minority’ who provide substandard accommodation, say landlords

The mayor of London’s pledge to publically name ‘bad’ landlords who have been convicted of housing-related offences is supported by the vast majority of landlords in the capital, according to a new poll.

The survey of landlords, conducted by the Residential Landlords Association (RLA), finds that 75% support plans for an online database listing landlords who have been successfully prosecuted for housing-related offences, part of a number of measures proposed by Khan in his London mayoral manifesto aimed at protecting private renters.

“Landlords are ready and willing to work with the new mayor to develop workable solutions to ensure the safe, legal and secure homes to rent we all want to see,” said RLA policy director, David Smith.

“The majority of landlords who provide decent housing and a good service to their tenants are fed up with the minority who provide substandard accommodation,” he added.

The survey also revealed that 59% of landlords support forcing letting agents to publish a breakdown of what their fees cover and 49% support capping the fees charged by letting agents to tenants and landlords.

With the mayor committed to developing new homes, 37% of respondents said they would consider investing in new properties to rent if the London boroughs identified small plots of unused public sector land for the development of such housing.
