Rogue landlord and accomplice fined £28k for scam

A landlord and her accomplice have been ordered to pay close to £28,000 after being caught out trying to con investigators into believing they were meeting health and safety regulations.

High Wycombe landlord, Nahida Rehman, rented out a five-bedroom house in the town, but lied about installing toilets and fire doors and even went as far as forging a fake builder’s invoice to dishonestly claim that the work had been carried out at the rented property in Bookerhill Road.

Following a property inspection earlier this year, the council’s private housing team told Rehman’s property manager, Yasser Khan, that a number of improvements were required to meet fire and various other health and safety requirements, including the installation of a fire door and an additional toilet.

But despite the warning, Rehman nor Khan carried out the necessary works, and instead focussed on trying to con the health and safety investigators. But they were exposed after a follow up check by the private housing team.

After being found guilty, judges ordered Rehman to pay a total of £17,986, including a £16,000 fine, £1,866 in costs and a victim surcharge of £120.

Meanwhile, Khan, of Chairborough Road, was fined £8,000 with full costs of £1,866 also demanded from him along with a victim surcharge of £120.
