A £5 raffle ticket could win you a £145k house in Leicester

A buy-to-let landlord is raffling off a three-bedroom house in the Leicestershire town of Wigston which is worth in the region of £145,000, but there is a catch.

Amit Sehgal, 37, told the press that he wants to help a needy family after witnessing the hardship caused by the government’s introduction of a housing benefits cap.

Sehgal, who owns a portfolio of properties across the Leicester area, said the idea was inspired by his sympathy for hard-up tenants, especially those who are facing eviction because of the government’s benefit cap.

Sehgal said: “I am totally against it, as are most landlords I think. I specialise in offering properties to rent for families relying on housing benefit and have seen at firsthand how tough it is on people.”

He continued: “They may be very good, honest people - sometimes single parents - who have just hit hard times.

“They are struggling anyway and, because of limited financial resources, cannot cope when the money for their rent is cut.

“They can get very angry and blame you, but there is not a lot a landlord can do if they can't pay the rent but get bailiffs involved.”

To be in with a chance of winning, you will need to buy a £5 raffle ticket, but the landlord said that the draw will only take place if he sells 60,000 raffle tickets, which would collectively raise £300,000.
