Reputable landlords recognised at awards ceremony

Some of country’s best private landlords have been recognised at an awards ceremony held in Sheffield.

The city’s Private Landlord Award event was held to recognise the achievements of the many good private landlords in Sheffield that provide high quality, safe rented homes.

The event was organised by Sheffield City Council as part of wider efforts to encourage landlords to continuously raise standards.

The authority targets the bad ones, and secured another conviction against a landlord in court last week. But for the first time the authority publically celebrated the achievements of the finest landlords.

Michelle Houston, service manager of private housing standards at Sheffield City Council, said: “An increasing number of people are living in rented housing and it’s important that we work well with our local landlords.

“Most in the city are very good, and deliver a great service to their tenants. And that’s what we recognised last night.

“We will carry on working together to drive up housing standards as well as continuing to focus on the bad landlords that put their tenants at risk.  These landlords tarnish the whole sector and are not welcome in our city.”

Peter Turkington, manager of PC Properties, which has around 120 student and professional properties, won the Letting Agent of the Year and Private Landlord of the Year awards.

He said: “Given the number of excellent landlords and letting agents in contention, I was delighted and very proud to have been chosen to receive these very prestigious awards. I’m extremely grateful to not only the hardworking staff at PC Properties, but to everyone that voted for us. It’s very satisfying to know our customers appreciate the service we provide.

“The Sheffield Landlord awards were a very successful event, and reflect how far we’ve come in recent years in building a positive working relationship between Sheffield City Council Private Housing Standards and the Private Landlord sector. As a consequence, we have seen significant improvement in not only the standard of accommodation, but equally important, the improved level of customer service.”

Around 16% of households in Sheffield (38,500) live in privately rented accommodation according to census data. This has doubled over the past ten years.

Councillor Jayne Dunn, Cabinet Member for Housing at Sheffield City Council, added: “Everyone deserves to live in safe, good quality housing regardless of whether they rent or own their home. We work closely with landlords to raise standards and are here to help anyone having problems with private rented homes.”
