‘Bed in shed’ landlord faces potential fine

A rogue landlord who allowed tenants to live in a shed without gaining planning consent from the local council has been warned to stop using his shed in this way or face action.

The rogue landlord has been receiving rental income by renting out an unauthorised extension added to his property in Harrow, which has been converted into a self-contained living space including a bed, kitchen and bathroom, without the accommodation being assessed as safe for habitation.

The unnamed landlord could now face prosecution and a hefty fine, unless he takes action immediately, according to Harrow Council, which discovered the unlawful living area a fortnight ago.

A spokesperson for Harrow Council said: “The landlord converted a rear extension into a residential unit without planning permission.

“We have asked the owner to stop the use of this and remove the kitchen and bathroom.

“If he does not remove this by 24 April then we will take further action and formal notice will be served.”
