Controversial landlord calls in police after receiving online abuse

The UK’s largest and arguably most controversial buy-to-let landlord Fergus Wilson has called in the police after receiving a tirade of online abuse from internet trolls after a leaked email exposed the fact that he will not allow ‘coloured people’ to rent his properties because ‘they make them smell of curry’.

Wilson, 69, reacted furiously after seeing images on Facebook of himself and his wife Judith holding doctored property boards with distasteful messages on them, such as “I am a racist c***, 2% of people disagree with this statement” and “racist, homophobic prick”, while was he was called a “racist dickwad” in a YouTube video.

A Kent Police spokesman said: “Kent Police is aware of this issue and will be working to establish if any offences have taken place.”

The controversy started after a leaked email from Wilson, who had already barred battered wives and plumbers from occupying his homes, requested that his letting agent, Evolution Properties, avoided “coloured people because of the curry smell at the end of the tenancy.”

Wilson, of Boughton Monchelsea, followed this up by telling the Sun: “To be honest, we’re getting overloaded with coloured people.

“It is a problem with certain types of coloured people — those who consume curry — it sticks to the carpet.

“You have to get some chemical thing that takes the smell out. In extreme cases you have to replace the carpet.”

Wilson has unsurprisingly been criticised by the anti-racism group Hope Not Hate.

The organisation said: “You simply cannot treat people like this and deny them a place to live due to their skin colour.

“If people such as this man continue to choose tenants on the basis of ethnicity he should face the full force of the law.”
