Trade body supports MP’s proposals to improve housing standards

An MP’s bid to make homes in the rented sector ‘fit for human habitation’ has received support from the Residential Landlords Association (RLA).

Karen Buck, the MP for Westminster North, has long voiced concerns that the poor state of some rental homes and wants to see overall standards improved.

The Labour MP plans to re-introduce her Homes (Fitness for Human Habitation) Bill in Parliament today.

David Smith, RLA policy director said: “Tenants have a right to expect that homes are fit for habitation, and the vast majority of good landlords already provide this. This Bill therefore reinforces what landlords should already be doing.

“By providing a route to direct tenant enforcement of basic housing standards the Bill will give a further opportunity to deal with the minority of landlords who have no place in the market.

“Current legislation often lets these criminals off the hook due to underfunded councils being unable to properly enforce it.

“We look forward to working with Ms Buck as the Bill is developed and considered in Parliament.”

Silly person! When any of my properties become unfit to live in the tenant leaves before they get evicted. They know when they are going to be hit with costs for the mess they have made. Next I go in and do a lot of cleaning and repairs and hey presto, there is a nice property for someone to live in. The cycle then starts again. Some times the new tenant is great but such people are soon off to move up the housing ladder.

I look at a newly filthy property and I ask myself if there is any point in cleaning it yet again? I do of course so that I can ask for a decent rent. Masochism can have financial benefits but only if the new tenant looks after the place.

Suggest they look at council owned properties. The council as landlord caused the biggest fatilaty by fire from a block they owned.
