Celebrities back campaign to make homes safer

Singer Midge Ure and West End actress Carley Stenson have backed a campaign attempting to make homes in this country safer.

Ure and Stenson have given their support to the 'Axe Safety Tax' initiative, which seeks to abolish VAT on the safety products and services going into UK homes.

As part of the campaign, the government is being urged to scrap the 20% tax on products including fire alarms, carbon monoxide detectors, gas safety checks, fire doors and fire extinguishers.

The initiative is being driven by tech company Gas Tag, which has developed products to ensure safety and compliance in the home, and has gained wide support including backing by a number of MPs and other celebrities including former England footballer Robbie Fowler.

Paul Durose, CEO of Gas Tag, said: “At a time when safety in the home is so high on the political agenda, it is a disgrace that safety products are taxed as if they were luxury items. In sharp contrast, annual MOT inspections which are also intended to save lives are zero-rated.”

There is an online petition to have the issue debated in Parliament.
