Student Housing says that it has become the first business of its kind in the UK to only use renewable energy at all its properties. 

The specialist lettings and property management firm, which provides homes to undergraduates in Lincoln and Nottingham, has moved all of its managed properties to So. Energy’s NET-ZERO plan.

All of Student Housing’s 1,300 tenants will now benefit from significantly lower priced renewable energy. In a few weeks, Student Housing will give student renters an opportunity to vote for the source of their renewable energy – solar, wind, hydro, biomass or tidal.

The company points to the fact that its high volume use opens up the opportunity to secure extremely competitive unit rates through bulk buying wholesale energy.

Harry Conti, director of Student Housing, said: “We use our bulk buying power to ensure that our electricity and gas rates are amongst the lowest on the market. 

“This means our tenants don’t have to worry about how much energy they use nor the impact their energy use has on the environment. All of our properties are let on a bills-inclusive basis, which is extremely popular. Our landlords like it too as we are reducing their energy bills. In fact, they’re winning twice, as we don’t charge them for managing the energy supply to their property.

“Everyone at Student Housing and our tenants care about the planet and want to use renewable energy. That’s why we moved all of our managed properties onto the greenest plan we could find. We think we’re the first lettings agent and property management company working with university students and leading industry experts to do this.”

So.Energy predicts that Student Housing will save 544 tonnes of CO2 in the next 12 months by moving all of its managed properties to renewable energy – that’s the equivalent of planting 435,000 CO2 soaking trees.

“Having been university students ourselves, we know what our tenants want, and that’s why we have the highest tenant retention rates of any Lincoln agency,” Conti added.
