‘For Sale’ and ‘To Let’ boards are one of the oldest and most important property marketing tools, even in this modern day of online marketing, as they allow prospective buyers and renters to know that a property is available, but their use could soon be banned by one major London council.
Camden Council is calling on the government to hand it new powers to ban the advertising of properties for rent and sale.
A consultation earlier this year saw 89% of respondents back plans for a borough-wide ban.
The council wrote to the Department for Housing, Communities and Local Government on 27 September requesting consent to ban the boards unless planning permission is sought and issued.
Cllr Danny Beales, Camden Council's planning chief, commented: "It's clear that from our consultation that an overwhelming majority of residents support the change.
“The boards are cluttering our streets, often left for months on end, effectively free advertising."

Great idea. They really are an eye-sore, especially when there are multiple boards from different agents outside a property. If I wish to sell an item on gumtree, etc.,or maybe sell my car, I can't just also stick up a board outside my home to that effect. So why is it allowed with property sales? Agents sometimes have them installed outside blocks where the leases actually forbid them -they just don't bother to ask or check. And their installers often fix them by driving large nails into brickwork, damaging it. It's free advertising for those agents too. Time to ban them.
Agree David. Also, what normally happens, when the house/flat is sold, they leave the board outside the property for ages.
you can stick a board out to sell your car
People don't go looking to buy / rent by the boards outside properties, these boards just invite the time wasters, business is done over the internet now by viewing web sites.
