New deposit protection training courses for landlords in Scotland

Landlords in Scotland are being offered an opportunity to attend new tenancy deposit adjudication workshops designed to offer training in tenancy deposit protection and tenancy deposit disputes.

The free tenancy deposit adjudication workshops will tour the country next month providing landlords and letting agents with coaching on avoiding tenancy deposit disputes and advice on providing evidence in the adjudication process.

There will be nine landlord and letting agent educational workshops in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Inverness, Aberdeen and Dundee.

Hosted by SafeDeposits Scotland, two courses will be on offer; a ‘Basic Workshop’, and a more advanced ‘Making the Case for Deposit Deduction Workshop’.

The Basic Workshop is designed for landlords and letting agents with little to no experience of tenancy deposit disputes. Delegates will be presented with case studies of real disputes which have been referred to SafeDeposits Scotland’s adjudication service and outline how the adjudicator awarded the disputed amount.

The more advanced course for more experienced landlords and letting agents will aim to help attendees improve the way they present cases for deposit deductions to tenants and, if necessary, the adjudicator. It will cover best practice and what can and cannot be claimed for under the tenancy deposit.

The first of the free half-day events will be held in Glasgow on Monday 1st April 2019 before visiting Edinburgh, Inverness, and Aberdeen.  The event series finishes in Dundee on 10th April.

Paula Guthrie, adjudication account manager at SafeDeposits Scotland, who will be leading the courses, said: “As well as protecting tenancy deposits, SafeDeposits is committed to providing guidance and raising standards in the private rented sector.

“These courses will help landlords and agents all over Scotland provide a higher quality service to their tenants and better protect their own investments.

“Some landlords and letting agents make errors at the beginning of tenancies which can cause problems at the end of the lease agreement.

“The private rented sector is always evolving, so these courses are a great way to keep up to date with best practice and new legislation.”
