NLA and RLA to join forces

The two largest landlord organisations in England and Wales, the National Landlords Association (NLA) and the Residential Landlords Association (RLA), have announced plans to merge with a view to creating a single organisation and delivering a stronger voice for landlords in the private rented sector.

The new organisation, the National Residential Landlords Association (NRLA), would have a membership of more than 80,000 landlords and manage around half a million properties, which is about 10% of the PRS. 

The planned merger has been approved by the existing boards of both organisations and comes as landlords face one of the most challenging periods for compliance throughout legislative change.


The new association will aim to launch officially on 1st January 2020, subject to initial approval at a general meeting of members on Tuesday 17th September 2019. 

The two chairs, Alan Ward of the RLA and Adrian Jeakings of the NLA, have said in a joint statement: “After more than 20 years of friendly competition the time is right to create a single organisation to represent and campaign for landlords.

“With so much of our work done in parallel there are major benefits to be gained for our landlord members.

“We will be stronger together when presenting a unified voice to government both nationally and locally about the importance of supporting the majority of landlords who do a good job providing the homes to rent the country needs.”

    No personal experience of either of them, I've been a member of Eastern Landlords for more than 20 yrs, well worth the £70 per yr, they have been very helpful, and are always there for us.

    I'm very pleased with this merger; it will become a stronger Company to support us Landlords. I rely a lot on the RLA Advice line and on the various Documents available to download. Also, as a RLA member, I find that the price of contents and buildings insurance offered, is very good. I'm just pleased I didn't go ahead and buy the NLA membership as well. LOL...

    2 mammoths , achieved nothing, S21/S21/TENANTS FEES BANNED/CGT AT 10% HIGHER THAN EVERY OTHER GAIN.. If they are prepared to attack the New PM and his cohorts I will be amazed.

    s24 needs to be cancelled now before every LL gets the Tax bill in January which will see an exodus of a huge proportion of the PRS

    Have been with the RLA for about 8 years and was not going to renew. Number of reasons - was given the wrong advice about evicting a tenant. On using The Landlord Group to carry out the eviction process, I discovered the wrong advice given. I have also taken their insurance once - a disaster that resulted in going to the Ombudsman to resolve and getting financial compensation. They will sell anything even if it doesn't actually match your needs! When I wrote to the RLA about their endorsed insurance providers they didn't bother replying. Have had a problem with them taking a direct debit for SAL, the Scottish Association of Landlords, even though I have sold my 4 Scottish properties now. Took from April til August before they even returned my email! I have just cancelled all direct debits to them. Was going to join the NLA when my membership expired. Let's hope they up their game when joined or I'll be quitting the lot!
