Additional home buyers should require planning consent - claim

Buyers of second or holiday homes in Snowdonia National Park should require planning permission to purchase.

That’s the view of the park's planning committee which wants the Welsh Government to change the law and make it tougher for outsiders to buy what often become second homes put on the holiday let market.

Committee chair Elwyn Edwards says 40 per cent of homes sold in the park recently have been for second or holiday purposes.

He told the BBC: “This has been happening for years, but not at this rate. I propose next month that the park asks members to support a call on the Welsh Government to change the planning law so that planning permission is required to convert a house into a second home or a holiday home.

"Since the Covid outbreak, about 40 per cent of all houses sold in Gwynedd have become second homes."

With the average pay in the area being £24,000 a year, locals find it “very difficult" to buy, he says.

The Welsh Government says Wales is the only UK nation where councils have the power to charge higher levels of council tax on second homes; the local Gwynedd council has already put a 59 per cent surcharge on council tax on such properties.

So how would a separating couple buy a second home?
Will the Council have to determine the state of a marriage or relationship before allowing what would be a 1st home for the separated partner!?

More lunatic socialist ideas from Labour.
