Landlord forced to handback housing benefits

A buy-to-let landlord in Bristol has been forced to hand £1,569 back to the council for housing benefit payments he received.

Charles Banda was ordered to pay £1569.10 back to the council for housing benefit payments he received from the authority relating to non-compliance with an Improvement Notice served under the Housing Act 2004.

Banda failed to remedy issues identified by the council in an Improvement Notice served in November 2018 regarding leaking sewage pipes and taps in a property occupied by a 69 year old adult. The council completed the works in default.

Cllr Paul Smith, cabinet member for housing, said: “This repayment order shows how important it is for tenants to come forward and assert their rights. The council is dedicated to assisting tenants where help is needed.”

He was given the chance to carry out the works, so why didn't he do them, it's landlords like this that do the rest of us no favors .

ONLY on the side of the story that we've heard ( which is dangerous ) I agree with you Andrew.

Unfortunately, rarely is there Balanced reporting that includes a response from the Landlord. I'd suggest that's when a true opinion can be formed.
Lets be fair, when have Councils ever portrayed an even-handed account of their dealing with Landlords.

We were quite pleased yesterday to hear that a Council was Withdrawing their Civil Penalty in response to our appeal to the FTT ;-)

Cllr Paul Smith should resign for come out with one-sided statements like that he is not fit for office. How can a Councillor be so one sided, telling tenants to come forward & assert their rights and Council is dedicated to assisting them.
Why don't he offer the same assistance to LL's and help assert our rights against Tenants ?, sorry I forgot he couldn't do that as we don't have any rights, so why is he in a job to discriminate solely against LL's, this is not fair or Justice no wonder people are loosing respect for the law.

LL have few rights and they will be fewer soon.

It is of course unfair but every LL must appreciate this NOBODY cares about unfairness to LL.

This simple reality must be considered when determining whether it is worthwhile becoming an AST LL.

Personally I don't believe it is anymore which is why I will be getting out of the game as soon as I can.
