UK holidays: Landlords should have ‘protection in place’ for short lets

Landlords thinking of letting property on a short-term let this summer are being urged to have the right insurance protection in place for their properties after new research found that one in five Brits causes damage to holiday homes.

Many people are holding out hope for a staycation boost this summer to help boost the UK economy, after Boris Johnson this week urged landlords to take a break in the UK rather than go abroad for a holiday. But landlords planning to cash in by stepping on the short-stay letting ladder are being warned to protect themselves.

Some 21% of Britons have damaged a UK holiday home accidentally, new research from Direct Line shows.

The study found that more than one in ten - 13% - have caused unintentional damage of £200 or more.

Somewhat unsurprisingly, young people are the most troublesome age group, with over one in three 18-34-year-olds - 34% - saying they have been responsible for accidental damage during their stay.

Londoners are the worst group regionally, with over half - 54% - admitting they have unintentionally caused problems in holiday homes.

Even more alarmingly, 5% said that they treat holiday homes with less respect than their own properties, and nearly a quarter - 24% - said they had kept quiet about the accidental damage they’d caused – something UK landlords definitely will not want to hear.

Direct Line research shows that the average cost per claim for accidental damage last year, amounted to a hefty £1,296.

With over one in three Britons - 36% - planning a staycation in a holiday home in 2020, it is naturally important that landlords are there could be more unpleasant and expensive surprises on the way for landlords; if they aren’t protected, according to Matthew Boatwright, head of Direct Line for Business at Direct Line.

He said: “These findings serve as a warning to holiday home-owners. Whether it’s unfortunate spillages on carpets, ring marks on furniture or broken kitchen appliances, landlords need to ensure they’ve got the right protection in place for their properties.”
