The proportion of the population in the private rented sector in England has risen three per cent in the past decade.

Research by lettings firm Ascend Properties, analysing government data, shows that owner occupied properties make up 63.9 per cent of the market in England, with private rentals on 19.4 per cent and housing associations or local authorities accounting for 16.7 per cent.

The research shows that across England, the number of people residing within the rental sector has increased by three per cent from 16.4 a decade ago, to 19.4 per cent today.

 

 

The agency estimates there has been an increase of 1.022m dwellings in the private rental tenure; with an average of 2.3 people to a dwelling means there are now an estimated 2,360,495 more people living in the private rental sector.

The North West, Yorkshire and the Humber, and West Midlands have seen the largest increases since 2011.
