A new table of UK city affordability offers some guidance for landlords looking for urban properties in some of the least expensive locations.
Halifax has produced a lease table of the most and least expensive cities; Winchester, a Hampshire commuter city, is the most expensive costing on average 14 times local average earnings. This makes it less affordable even than Greater London at 11 times.
Typically, buying a home in a UK city will now set buyers back 8.1 times their average earnings, up from 5.6 times a decade ago.
Over the past year, the Halifax – which has analysed data from he Office for National Statistics to compile its league table – says the average house price in UK cities has grown by 10.3 per cent.
Average city house prices increased to £287,440, while comparable average earnings rose to £35,677.
This data below, from Halifax, shows the price-to-earnings ratio followed by the average house price and average annual earnings in the area.
