Hotspot’s second homes council tax premium to be agreed soon

Councillors in a second home hotspot will be asked to decide on the level of council tax premium for the next year in a series of meetings between now and Christmas.

A public consultation took place during the summer when Conwy council in north Wales invited second and long term empty property owners, as well as those who don’t own such properties, to give their opinions on what the premium should be.

People were also invited to give their opinion on what effect the premium has on tourism, the Welsh language and affordable housing.

Over 900 responses were received.

The premium is designed to encourage owners to bring empty properties into use and support the increase of affordable housing for purchase or let in local communities.

The results of the consultation and a range of other information has been considered by the local authority’s Affordable Housing (Council Tax Premium) Working Group.

A spokesperson says: “This is a complicated issue, and research and the work that goes into considering the impact on the economy and the Welsh language of additional council tax premiums is an important part of our considerations. It’s also important to note the proposal that, as previously, the funds raised support pressures in the council’s housing services budget.”

Wales, a place I've never visited and never will.

Paul will always support measures to pay him by robbing Peter.

Most second home owners are disenfranchised from voting for Councils which set the rules where they have second homes, same for private residential landlords.

I would bet the outcome will be to screw the second home owners.

No thought will be given to the benefits of tourism, jobs for locals etc.

Those local vendors selling to the highest bidder will also escape the spotlight or any higher costs but if they had taken a lower offer from another local then this "problem" wouldn't exist.

then they should demand a vote

I ive in wales, its very beautiful, but there is a lot of spongers here and some politicians are communists masquerading as others, I think that the leader of the welsh government is one such person. The miners never went back to work after the miners strike, which ahs led to a leagcy of sponging.

Scotland has similar issues and it's the practice of all parties except the Conservatives to blame"Westminster" whilst also lumping in landlords and second home owners for special criticism and hatred.

The solution punted by Comrades Sturgeon and Harvey is "independence", provided the EU will give us the same handouts which the Irish Republic has grabbed since they started to suffer the effects of their own "independence" from the UK, although they retained alignment to the £ until conned into the Euro.

As in all other countries the only real problem in wales are the politicians
