Avoiding eviction - Council says it’s piloting mediation scheme

A local council has let it be known that it’s in a pilot mediation scheme set up by the government - and it wants landlords to use it.

Cherwell council in Oxfordshire says as part of the alternatives to eviction, there could be “temporary rent reductions, mediation and possible financial support for their tenants.”

Councillor John Donaldson, the authority’s housing spokesperson, says: “There are a range of alternatives to eviction. We are here to raise awareness of those to help keep renters in their homes. In particular, we are highlighting the Housing Possession Mediation Pilot Scheme.

“This is an independently-run service which offers a new way of resolving possession cases before they get to a court hearing.”

The mediation scheme is funded by the government and run independently by the Society of Mediators.

Sessions will be conducted by telephone, email, WhatsApp or Zoom and can be a way for parties to resolve disputes without the stress of going to court.

The mediation pilot was announced by the government last month, and has been backed by trade organisations including the National Residential Landlords Association and the Association of Residential Letting Agents.

“Helping to resolve disputes through mediation will enable courts to prioritise urgent cases, supporting landlords and tenants to resolve issues quickly without the need for a formal hearing. The mediation pilot will work within the existing court arrangements in England and Wales” says Housing Secretary Robert Jenrick.

I don't agree with 3rd party Mediation, we as LL have been doing it for years, do they not think we didn't always try to resolve issues with the Tenant first, its only as the very last resort LL's goes to down the legal route. The Council have to poke their nose in again making Mediation impossible when the Tenant sees Council on his side its not happening, can those people not do a real job and earn their living.
