Insight - major changes to household size in recent years

A new analysis of government figures shows major changes in Britain’s families and the ‘home unit’ between 2015 and 2020.

This may be an indicator of longer-term property demand.

Parent help website Play Like Mum says the main points of their analysis show that households with four people saw the greatest percentage increase although the most common household size consisted of two people.

In addition men are more likely than women to live alone. The age group that is most likely to be living alone is 45 to 64 years old with an 8.1 per cent increase in male solo households and a 7.0 per cent increase in female solo households.

Civil partner couples have increased by almost 50 per cent since 2019, when opposite-sex couples were allowed to enter civil partnerships, while there has been a greater overall decrease in lone mother families (down 6.4 per cent) than lone father families (down 1.6 per cent).

Same-sex cohabiting couple families have drastically increased by almost exactly a third, while opposite-sex cohabiting couple families have increased by 9.4 per cent - and both types of couples have seen an increase in the number of families without children.

Married and cohabiting couple families have seen an increase in two children, while single parents are more likely to have three or more children.
