Major London licensing consultation closes this month

There are just three weeks left for landlords to respond to one of the largest consultations undertaken by a council in London.

Southwark council wants the views of landlords, agents, tenants and businesses about its broad approach to the private rental sector, as well as its plan for new additional and selective property licensing schemes.

A third of the people living in Southwark are in private rented accommodation.

The new five-year additional licensing scheme would apply to all Houses in Multiple Occupation that are not already licensable under the mandatory HMO licensing scheme.

It would include smaller rental properties occupied by three or more unrelated people, forming two or more households who share amenities such as a kitchen or bathroom. The scheme would also include certain converted blocks of flats known as section 257 HMOs.

Meanwhile the proposed five year selective licensing scheme consists of four separate ‘sub schemes’ applying overall to every privately let property not already licensable under the mandatory HMO or additional licensing schemes.

Southwark council says: “Tell us about your experiences of privately rented homes in your area – whether first-hand, or things you have seen. The survey should take five minutes to complete and your views will make a difference.”

You can see the consultation here - it closes on June 28.
