Eden council in Cumbria says it needs private landlords’ help to solve its housing problems – and there “may” be financial incentives.

Cllr Judith Derbyshire, housing and health portfolio holder at Eden council, says: “We believe that everyone should have a place to call home. No two properties or tenants are the same, so we tailor our support for each tenant, based upon their needs.”

So the council has launched what it calls its Property Links scheme to match those that are facing homelessness with private landlords who are looking for long-term tenants.

The council is looking for all types of properties in Eden which are available for private rent.  

Benefits of the scheme include no management fees or commission – landlords retain 100 per cent of the agreed rental income – plus a free comprehensive property inventory at the start and end of the tenancy.

There will be a dedicated officer to provide support and signposting to both tenant and landlord, and landlords retain full control and decision making throughout the tenancy.

At the end of the statement launching the plea to the private rental sector, the council says: “Financial incentives may also be available to landlords, subject to criteria.”
