Webinars for landlords puzzled by laws surrounding renting out

A specialist lettings agency is holding a series of webinars for landlords who may fell they need help navigating some 170-plus pieces of legislation surrounding the private rental sector.

Josh Mitchell, general manager of Sugarhouse Properties in Leeds - a firm which exclusively lets student and young professional accommodation - will be hosting the web events to raise awareness to regulations concerning, in particular, inventories, licensing, health and safety and the upcoming Renters’ Reform Bill and White Paper.

“I have been working in the property rental market for over 10 years and so much of my time is spent dealing with the increasing amounts of regulations and continuous updates to ensure the properties we manage on behalf of our landlords are compliant” explains Mitchell.

“It’s not only potential penalties that landlords have to worry about these days, but some breaches in regulations can have detrimental impacts to a landlords ability to let out a property in the future. Our aim for these sessions is to provide help and guidance to the student and young professional landlords of Leeds, to avoid the common pitfalls that we see far too often catching landlords out.”

A high percentage of the private rental market in Leeds is student accommodation and the agency says tenants’ expectations for better quality housing, along with safety and security often feature at the top of their wish list. Landlords therefore need to ensure that not only are their properties meeting tenant demands, but also ensuring they are safe and compliant.

“If you ever feel that your valuable time is better spent than reading through endless pages of new or amendments to existing legislation, then we’d love to discuss how we might be able to take away some of that pain moving forwards” concludes Mitchell.

He is encouraging landlords who own properties in the Leeds area to register their interest for the webinars by joining the newly created Leeds Private Landlord group on Facebook; this group encourages discussions with like-minded people, offers support and advice from fellow landlords and industry professionals.
