Council launching landlord accreditation at energy efficiency teach-in

A council is inviting landlords to an event at which it will both launch a new accreditation scheme and offer guidance on insulation for private rental properties.

Barnsley council is launching Barnsley Rent Smart at an event on March 23.

There will also be a presentation on the new online platform - Local Pad – and an update on what the council says are "all of the  benefits and assistance that landlords can receive in joining the scheme.”

There will also be energy efficiency discussions to help landlords bring the energy efficiency standards of properties up to the Minimum Energy Efficiency Standard currently required by law, which is Energy Performance Certificate rating E.

That is due to change to band C by 2030 at the very latest, and government has already announced plans to bring that date forward.

Funding being made available through Barnsley council will support bringing standards up to band C, which will future-proof properties for the forthcoming changes.

“This benefits tenants through reduced energy bills and warmer, more comfortable homes, and in turn further benefits landlords through happier tenants and more stable tenancies” says the authority.

A spokesperson says: “There are an estimated 21,483 private rented properties in Barnsley and we want to support landlords to provide sustainable, quality housing.

“We urge landlords not to wait for the law to change, but to take advantage of the help and support that’s available to act now. This will help reduce our carbon footprint as a borough, provide warmer more comfortable homes with lower bills for tenants, and protect landlords from falling short of the law.”

More details and booking for the event can be found via landlords@barnsley.gov.uk.

It sounds a sensible thing to do by Barnsley..... but what about all the other local authroites ? Not heard a thing from my council. It also hinges on what funding is available to LL's, if its a loan then forget it, a grant, and a lot of us will listen.

I don't hold much hope out with the loony left labour / greens in Norwich council giving out landlord grants, they hate any one and every one in business.

No grants are ever worth the hassle of applying and are avoided by most reputable local tradesmen, funding the cowboys.

I tend to agree Robert from past experience .
