Sunak stacking economy against tenants, says campaigning Baroness

The leader of the Generation Rent campaign group has accused Chancellor Rishi Sunak of “stacking the economy against private renters who have to work for a living.”

Responding to this week's Spring Statement, Baroness Alicia Kennedy - director of Generation Rent - says: “We are in a dangerous moment with millions about to be plunged into fuel poverty and people already in poverty facing desperate choices between heating and eating.

“When inflation is running at 7.4 per cent, the Chancellor should have targeted help towards those least able to manage, by raising benefits at the same rate and making sure Local Housing Allowance covers rising rents. The higher National Insurance threshold will help many private renters but not our most vulnerable neighbours.

“Taking the National Insurance and income tax changes together, the Chancellor is stacking the economy against private renters who have to work for a living.”

She says that while the Health and Social Care Levy will cancel out the planned income tax cut for workers, landlords will be better off because they they don't pay National Insurance on rental income.

“If he wants economic growth, the Chancellor should be shifting taxation from work to property wealth, and encouraging investment in more productive parts of the economy” says the Baroness.

“The VAT cut on energy efficiency measures is welcome but until the government acts on its promises to raise minimum energy efficiency standards for landlords and improve security of tenure, renters won’t feel the benefit.”

I was just thinking it was nice that she was targeting someone other than LLs for once - then she had a pop at LLs for not paying NI!

Does the noble Baroness pay NI on the £300 per day hand out she gets from the tax payers for sitting around in an ermine dressing gown?

I thought the same as Tricia. But never lets us down with a quick kicking. What about families who pay a mortgage with rising rates? But none of these factors will affect people like the so called Baroness They use false sympathy as a tool to earn money like any trades person. Earning a fortune while pretending to beat a different drum. It’s people like Baroness Alisher that make me sick.

Rent controls at inflation plus 1% would see our rents rising by 8.4% right now.

Presumably the noble Baroness would be happy to justify that to those she claims to represent and want to protect?

But is inflation only 7.4% right now, I would put the true figure well above 10%, not that that would affect the life style of the lady ranting here.

More lies to beat up small business.
    To justify taxing us more.
Clever spin by saying working people pay extra tax and property companies dont pay the same tax.
Conclusion, make the companies pay the same?
I don't think so. what about the unfair level of taxes property companies already pay.
Like I have said before. We should be in the same category as farming.
    With the equivalent taxation regime.
