Town given £650,000 by Michael Gove to clampdown on landlords

Michael Gove’s Department of Levelling Up, Housing and Communities has given £650,000 to one town to clampdown on rogue landlords.

A statement from the department says: “Longstanding neglect by some local landlords has led to Blackpool experiencing some of the worst housing conditions in the country, with at least one in three properties classified as 'non-decent'.

“An expanded local enforcement team will take tough action against those not meeting existing standards and measure landlords against future national standards.

“This beefed-up inspection regime will tackle exploitation in the local private rented sector and supported housing market, driving up housing quality and protecting the most vulnerable.

“Alongside this enforcement drive, Homes England will join forces with Blackpool Council, using additional funding of £650,000 to explore regeneration opportunities to improve Blackpool’s housing stock and quality of place.

“And there’s support for residents in supported housing as well with a portion of a further £20m, over three years, to improve standards of support and drive out unscrupulous providers.”

The government has also set out additional funds for investment and infrastructure in Blackpool, including regeneration schemes and new housing.

Secretary of State for Work and Pensions Rt Hon Thérèse Coffey MP says: “We are working to protect vulnerable people in Blackpool and beyond, and to ensure that everyone has somewhere safe they can call home, which is why this announcement sets out the Government’s clear intention to stop the small minority of poor landlords who don’t do enough for tenants.

“I’m particularly pleased that Blackpool will be benefiting from this vital investment as we continue to level up and proud we are one of the town’s biggest employers.”

I think we all want to see rogue landlords dealt with but where are all their rogue tenants going to live? I don't want them

I think you could buy up every BTL property in Blackpool for £650k - they would probably throw in all the social rental properties too for that amount!

Personally I wouldn't take any of them in a gift!

Andrew you are so right. Ever since we stopped sending what we now referred to as vulnerable tenants (crooks, druggies, alcoholics and the mentally ill) to Australia all we are doing is shunting vunerable tenants into different areas.

It's about time that Blackpool did it's bit of social cleansing but of course we can't call it that, just blame the landlord's. The landlord's that they crackdown on most of the time will sell up.

When is the Government going to face up to its responsibility? It is a social problem.
