BBC wants to get to bottom of rental stock shortage

Landlords are being invited to let the BBC know what it believes lies behind the current rental market stock shortage.

The corporation has contacted the agents’ body ARLA Propertymark as part of its research into the private rented sector - but ARLA says all parts of the lettings sector can respond, not just agents.

A statement from the trade body says: “With the UK government’s Renters’ Reforms White Paper looming, the consultation on A New Deal for Tenants in Scotland and legislation coming into force including the Renting Homes (Wales) Act and the Private Tenancies Bill in Northern Ireland it seems no landlord or agent is safe from the heat.”

Nathan Emerson, Propertymark’s chief executive comments:  “Through our contacts we have been offered the opportunity to put this issue onto a national platform and present our side of the story.

“The housing system needs a balance of tenures, and the value the private rented sector brings must not be underestimated. Landlords provide much needed homes and the country cannot afford to lose them.

“We have an immense opportunity to get some solid evidence in front of decision makers and huge media outlets.”

The survey is open to the whole sector and Propertymark says it will provide significant information for use in conversations with governments and politicians when lobbying for the sector against detrimental proposals as well as by the media.

Propertymark says: “If you think the PRS is under attack from policy makers add your voice. Be Heard Here."

I have completed the survey but despite the article asking for private landlords to give their view the survey is not designed for us.

Yet another survey, yet another organisation being 'interested' but it won't reduce the hurdles landlords have to jump through, lost income due to rogue tenants, the law always being on the tenants' side and and huge financial loss trying to reclaim one's property. In my case, my tenant (6 months notice ignored, now 9 months and in process of court case.
I did use an agent for a short time but they were worse than useless at 'managing' and this seems to be the case with other landlords I know.

I wouldn't pay much regard to anything the BBC has to say.

The government want to make things increasingly difficult and costly for landlords then complain when rents rise and there is limited housing stock available. Its a vicious cycle.

Another very simplistic survey that will not reveal anything a 5 min chat with a LL would give them :(

"How many offices are in your agency business?"

Ehh? this is a survey for agencies not individual landlords!

Try again with a survey for landlords if you want to know what landlords think!

    Totally agree.
No one seems to even bother to ask the landlords themselves what the problems are!

I will give it a miss given the comments above, the government have already decided what they will be doing, we have been set up as the fall guy for all that has failed in the housing market. I am out, just a couple of years ahead and all the properties will be sold.

Waste of time as the letting agency stats are compulsory reponses - end of survey, unsubmitted. Unlike Simon, I didn't have the good sense to read the comments first. An alternative to a separate questionnaire for the PRS would be the email address of the BBC researcher.

    Try Luvvieatbbccouk ?

I wasn't allowed to show this in the usual email address format as the system thought I was serious!
