Women-only rental website expands service to tenants

A lettings platform that operates for female tenants has announced enhancements to its service.

Her Roomies differentiates itself by being a female-focused rental accommodation platform and by offering what it calls “a community of women a rental ecosystem.”

Now it will have a widget embedded on its website from the information supplier Crystal Roof - this will offer users a “digital property verification process” called HomecheckHER.

This will involve local information on neighbourhoods, initially focussed on London boroughs, to help tenants select locations to live in.

Her Roomies was set up 18 months ago and now claims over 100,000 users worldwide.

A statement from the platform says: “Letting agents are increasingly using new technologies such as online listing, video and e-signing. Covid has certainly driven the adoption of PropTech. However, that is really where the [agents’] use of technology ends.”

It says that traditional residential property rental platforms are non-segmented and are focused on transactional rentals, whereas Her Roomies offers a segmented market that will help landlords target their properties to female tenants, and is building a community to  build loyalty and lifetime value rather than a one-off transaction.

The platform offers all types of properties from rooms to whole flats to co-living to student residences, offers users a flatmate compatibility tool and claims to have safety-first property verification services.

Her Roomies was founded in October 2020 by daughter and father team Chiara Fraser and Nick Fraser.

The founders of Crystal Roof, Uladzimir Sukharukau and Viktoryia Varzinava, claim to know firsthand how hard it can be to find the right home in a city like London, which is why they developed their app.

The husband-and-wife team say that “If we had access to the information we needed, we would have been able to save nearly 30 hours of wasted time viewing unsuitable properties. And if that wasn't enough, we had to face the excessive moving costs and, on occasions, had to pay the rent for both the old and new property due to minimal tenancy restrictions.”

Chiara Fraser, co-founder of Her Roomies, says: “Your home should be your sanctuary. The place where you feel safe, comfortable and can decompress after the stresses of daily life. Women face more challenges than men when seeking rentals, partly due to the gender pay gap and because they have certain safety requirements and wants like neighbourhoods and proximity to facilities. At Her Roomies, we have always been committed to helping women find their ideal home and this partnership only increases our capacity to do so.”

Women only? Surely this goes against the equality act or something...

    Richard Law

Why does this bother you?! It’s an excellent idea. It’s maybe a niche area but it’s good to provide this service for women who may feel vulnerable moving to a new property especially in a new area.

Doesn't bother me but what would they say if we said men only? generally I have found male tenants to be less hassle than female tenants and cleaner

I didn't say it bothered me. I'd like to understand what's ok and not ok in the eyes of the law. And when I say that I don't mean arbitrarily in the eyes of Richard Law.

    Chris Lee, I agree.
In today’s world of equality, why are they trying to state that ‘women only’ rental website/Digital platform is required in U.K.?

This is just another marketing ploy, to influence weak minded women or potentially also attract predator landlords who will want to advertise on platforms meant for only one gender section of society.

Spending 30 hours to find a suitable rental property, doing due diligence to find the right property to rent & spending money in moving costs is standard process globally, not a big surprise for anyone-let alone a sensible woman!
Smart women need to do own due diligence than fall prey to these types of doubtful rental websites claiming to be for ‘women only’.
National Crime Agency may find these useful source though to investigate crimes.

Nothing new about this in my book I had an all female house for more than 30 years before them, now suddenly it’s a new idea. Dozens of women / girls rotated over the years it worked well in shared accommodation, often the Parents of their daughters came to see where they were living and delighted with the friendly safe situation.

I have had all male houses as well at a time when they knew what gender they were.

  • icon

We rented a house for females only - everyone was so happy there, feeling safe and secure. UNTIL we became inundated with males objecting to our advertisement stating ‘females only’, resulting in us being told to adjust or remove our advertisement!

I have found often the single female tenants soon move the moron boy friend in

I have had some try that, there were 5 girls sharing jointly & severally when this scenario arose they had a house vote and other 4 girls soon put a stop to that…

I had asked a question about the definition of a woman but it's been censored.

Seems it's not only politicians who want to side step this question!

    👏👏 Lol 😂🤣 Robert Brown.

Definition of a woman in my opinion: A child biologically born as a female at the time of birth is defined as a Woman after turning into an adult.

Although other genders may portray/think/claim to feel/external visually appear/can have surgery to look like a woman, it doesn’t actually make them a woman in reality.
One is born how one is born- within the biological definitions.
One has a right to define oneself as one wants afterwards.
    Hope my perspective helps others.

This smacks of Carrie and her man hating agenda, or you might describe it as les bians first.

Oh dear. I never had a problem distinguishing who is a man or a woman until now.
There has been several changes to the law in recent years as to what we can say or how we can refer to people or various cultures or religions, colours, or nationalities or gender.
Surely we must know by now it’s called freedom or speech fair enough.
