Six year high for rental growth, government figures show

Average rental prices across the UK rose at the highest level since 2016 in June, government figures show. 

Even so that annual rise - 3.0 per cent - was relatively modest. 

The data comes from the Office for National Statistics and show an increase in the annual rate from the 2.6 per cent recorded in May.

“Rents continued to grow across the country, with the East Midlands seeing the biggest rises” says Ceri Lewis, housing market statistician at the ONS. “London was again lowest, though its rate of increase continues to climb.”

Separately, ONS figures on the sales market show that capital appreciation surged to 12.8 per cent in the year to May, up from 11.9 per cent in April. 

“Annual house price inflation edged up again, with the strongest rises seen in Wales. London again saw the lowest increase, though prices there are continuing to accelerate” adds Lewis.

English house prices increased 13.1 per cent in the 12 months to May. London prices rose 8.2 per cent, the slowest pace of growth across the UK regions and countries.
