Council is latest to advise landlords to improve safety - or else

Landlords in Carlisle are being urged to put in place safety measures to protect their tenants with the local council join ing other authorities in outlining financial penalties for non-compliance.

New regulations will come into force on October 1 meaning that social housing must at last catch up with the private rental sector in terms at least one smoke alarm on each storey of homes where a room is used as living accommodation.

In addition all landlords - private and social - must ensure a carbon monoxide alarm is provided in any room used as living accommodation which contains a fixed combustion appliance, excluding gas cookers.

And all landlords will be legally obligated to ensure smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms are repaired or replaced once they are informed and the alarms are found to be faulty.

The council is telling private landlords to begin installing alarms if they haven’t yet, to ensure they are compliant with the new regulations when they come into force on October 1.

And a statement from the council warns: “Any landlord found to be in breach could be fined up to £5,000 and landlords should prepare for these changes right away.”

The council’s guidance for landlords and tenants can be found here.
