In Hot Water: Landlord must pay £40k because of no kitchen

Islington Council in London has prosecuted a landlord who repeatedly failed to comply with licensing regulations, including refusal to provide a kitchen for a tenant.

The case was brought by the council’s Environmental Health team after an investigation revealed 15 breaches of residential property licensing conditions and a further two breaches of property management regulations.

These breaches included leaving one tenant without access to a kitchen.

Mohammed Shahid, owner of the property on Islington’s Holloway Road, was sentenced in January but his appeal has only recently been heard.

Shahid was instructed by the judge to pay a fine of £31,250, costs of £8,657 and a victim surcharge of £190. Further costs associated with the appeal were also imposed.

A council spokeswoman says: “Islington Council is determined to ensure that everyone in our community has a decent, safe and genuinely affordable place to call home.

“Landlords who consistently fail to uphold their responsibilities to their tenants, will not be tolerated in Islington. People should feel safe in their own homes, and they should be provided with everything they need to have a good quality of life.

“We hope that this prosecution will send a clear message to landlords that if they fail to comply with the rules, we will take legal action."

So Islington Council get £39k and the poor bloke depived of the kitchen in the first place get £190!!

Now you understand what the real agenda is

Surely he knew he didn't have a kitchen when he rented it.

Islington, that was where houses were compulsory purchased in the 50s as slums, for a song. What are they worth of now, north of £5 million?

Gosh the poor Tenant as said was happy to rent it then complain afterwards & acquired compo, maybe no one else would have him. Why the usual money grab by the Council £39k what for, they are not the injured party. Often when I rented a room I had no kitchen but use the shared cooker & sink on the landing, put your money in for use of Geyser & Cooker. The Council could install a kitchen and still have £30k left. I know it’s expensive for Council for the convenience of getting out of Office for a couple of hours and having to trot down to his colleague at Court where the outcome is guaranteed, really making a mockery of the justice system.
