Taxpayers to fund training for tenants in how to complain

In an unexpected statement from the government it’s been announced that social housing residents will be able to get training and support “to speak up and raise issues with their landlord.”

A £500,000 grant to provide training, boost confidence and offer toolkits for residents on a range of social housing issues has opened for bids.

The so-called Resident Opportunities and Empowerment programme will run from Autumn 2022 to Spring 2025. According to a statement from the Department of Levelling Up, Housing and Communities it “will empower social housing residents across England to hold their landlord to account.”

It includes opportunities for residents to learn how to influence landlord decisions that affect tenants and their community. For example, guidance on how to form a residents panel will help residents in engaging with their landlords where services, such as repairs and maintenance, do not meet required standards.

Junior housing minister Eddie Hughes says: “Tenants have a right for their voices to be heard - and we want to ensure they have the tools and resources to do this.   We committed to rebalancing the relationship between social housing tenants and landlords as part of our Social Housing White Paper.

“This new grant will enable an organisation with expertise in the sector to help tenants take an active role in how their home is managed.

“The £500,000 grant is open to bids from organisations or partnerships in England with relevant expertise in the social housing sector and an understanding of the importance of resident empowerment. “

Applicants should have experience in: providing training within the social housing sector;  working collaboratively with landlords to deliver outcomes beneficial to residents and their communities; establishing links and networks to reach social housing residents, including underrepresented demographics and new audiences;  and   delivering projects that provide value for money.

    Woke off the scale here..

These social housing tenants don’t need any help in how to complain. Some are far too good at it. They would rather spend time complaining to their landlord and looking for compensation or some other gain rather than look for a JOB. Others, well the state is having to pay for you so you probably have nothing to complain about for what you are paying if anything.

Taxpayers money would be better directed in giving some of these tenants a kick up the **** about how they are already heavily subsidised / completely paid for by others and they should stop filling out endless forms for more money and get a job.

    Impartiality Statement:
I recognise there are genuine claimants out there who can’t work or make ends meet without help.

What a waste of Public Funds, they have lost the plot. Close this so called levelling up Department immediately unbelievable stupid nonsense.
Trying to tell them how to Complain as if they didn’t know with their iPhones, lap tops and Computers.
This is more of the same like the ‘How to Rent Guide’ by Shelter as if they didn’t know and they doing it for decades before or the so called Model Tenancy Agreement’s 80 + pages of nonsense that’s unusable. Eddie close your stupid Department now before more damage is done.

This will be a popular story here, but what is wrong in teaching people their rights? If people knew their rights we would live in much better society.

    icon

They have too many rights as it is. We don’t need to spend more public funds teaching these people how to complain.

    icon

    Rights and obligations go together.

People should be taught both together along with gratitude if being supported by the taxpayer.

  • icon

OF COURSE SOME OF US HAVE BEEN COMPLETELY STRIPPED OF ANY RIGHTS SO WE DON'T HAVE ANY RIGHTS TO BE TAUGHT ABOUT

  • icon

Mark, couldn’t agree more if tax payers knew their rights half those Social Tenants would be cut off. Unmarried Mothers with Children or split we Husband or partners to be housed & kept for free for ever. Just check how those numbers have sky rocketed. Half a million £’s to teach them how to complain as if they didn’t know, how about teaching them to earn a living instead of leaving School having babies as quickly as possible to get housed & kept go ever.
So now we have to teach people how to Complain my goodness you couldn’t stop them Complaining.

    How very constructive

Basically we’re rapidly becoming a communist state thanks to corrupt politicians

Excellent news, you don't know how happy I am that my S24 money is being so well spent.
I can't sell quick enough....which is a shame as I like and get on well with nearly all my tenants.

    icon

I don't want to sell, but it's looking more and more likely that government policies are going to push me that way, 69 tomorrow, do I want all this s... at my time of life ?

Somewhere, probably in the vicinity of the Palace or Westminster, there is surely a group of civil servants whose mandate is to find ways of damaging landlords and increasing homelessness. At the same time they have to dream up ways of spinning the measures to ensure that they appear to be helping some allegedly downtrodden sector - usually the tenants. The advice given to the temporary housing minister (were there ever any permanent ones?) goes into his ears and out of his mouth without passing through his brain. The homeless ex tenants, who would probably vote to the left, have no vote so it’s a win win for the tory party. The landlords – well who cares about them?

  • icon

Next up for tenants, apparently,is a free course on how to wipe your botty, along with 'free' loo paper naturally

    icon

You joke. I have said on here before it's getting to the stage where the landlord will be expected to visit the tenants and wipe their bottoms for them. They don't have to do anything. They are ENTITLED TO EVERYTHING AND RESPONSIBLE FOR NOTHING.

It’s kind of like Trump telling the Germans not to buy Russian gas. These groups of landlord haters really are the turkeys that vote for Christmas. And Christmas in our trade is starting, every day there is more and more about people pouring out of the sector. Even Phil Spencer has made a you tube video on it. Worth a look.

Government and councils are addicted to throwing tax payers money away for no gain and with no accountability. The fact they can spend £500k on a program like this is proof of that.

  • David Lester

Maybe they should teach these tenants on how to keep a relationship together so that society doesn't have to pay for absent parents!

  • icon

How about teaching them the what 3 words for their local job centre. Total nonsense, and yet another nail in the coffin for the PRS, this may be just social now…. We all know what is coming 🤔🤔

    icon

The only what 3 words they know are "I don't work"

    icon

That's my view. This is just for social now but they will roll it out everywhere. Probably spending tens of millions on training camps for tenants on benefits to learn how to complain!

I've had first hand experience of this
A local pub was converted into a rainbow centre 🌈. Our local tenant went there, suddenly she demanded the deeds, because we had bought the property cheap from an auction and done it up cheaply and they had paid for it. None of this was true. Further she demanded the deeds, otherwise she would make our life hell. And she did ! they put a lot of effort into it, and blagged every inspector etc and l/we proved it all to be totally inaccurate. They went, we kept the deeds. Oh yes, there terrier was accidentally let out and it bit me, from behind !

    Edwin

    How are you?

I noted one of your comments where you said a certain type of person took over the banks in Russia.

Could you expand on this please.

    Best

As l have pointed out this is a communist government, and this is straight out of the Marxist cookbook

  • icon

FFS. It's probably true that some training could be useful in many ways for some people, especially where they left school with little or no education. How about how to manage your money, how to manage yourself and have good relationships with others, reducing conflict in your life, be a good citizen, avoiding harmful behaviours, addictions etc but this?? Really??

  • icon

How about some training in the need to keep the property clean, and how to do minor repairs that arise like changing a light bulb or a fuse.

Also it would be good if they were trained in fire safety issues so that they don't block fire escapes with their bikes.

    icon

Yes for HMOs it would also be how to get on with other people, consideration for others, how to put your rubbish in the right bin, how to tie a bin bag and put it out for collection, how to clean the bathroom, how to do your washing up and not just leave it for days, how to keep your room clean, how to pull the curtains and open the windows, how to do your fair share of providing bin bags, loo rolls etc, how to do your washing and not leave it drying on radiators etc etc

Yes Sad LL, that’s me very little education I think that’s a + by comparison to what they are turning out today. I had to earn my living from a young age but I always knew how to live, save, behave and present my-self. I now need training having done it for decades because I am now not able to cope with all the crap they have invented to burden LL’s. so it’s nothing to do with quality affordable housing that’s not a problem, what is a problem is all the superficial costs that have been imposed on the Sector.
How to Rent guide by Shelter to tell Tenants how to Rent, how did they Rent before this nonsense forced in in 2016 and changed about 13 times since I have lost count I think its about 80 pages now from 8/9 scrap it not warranted, they know how 2 rent goodness me they now have everything at they fingertips. I was able to build & fund my own house almost 50 years ago and with only hand tools while living in a rented room, (still have it), now they have degree coming out of their ears and need 50 year Mortgage’s something seriously wrong maybe we should be training them.

    icon

There's education and then there's common sense, the 2 rarely go together, to succeed in business you need the latter, this country seems to be full of academic fools today
