Ignoring Prohibition Order leads to fine for rogue landlord

A landlord has been fined after pleading guilty to breaching a prohibition order preventing him from letting a property.

The Isle of Anglesey county council had initially served a prohibition order under the Housing Act 2004 in respect of the property in September 2013.

The property presented an imminent risk to the occupants’ health after seven category 1 hazards were found by officers during a visit. 

The prohibition order imposed prohibited persons to live or sleep in the dwelling until the order was revoked.

However, the council’s attention was drawn to the property again last April after a complaint about the amount of rubbish left behind it.

Investigations over several months concluded that individuals were residing at the property in violation of the prohibition order.

Now landlord Ricky Danis of Menai Bridge has pleaded guilty to breaching the prohibition order at Caernarfon Magistrates Court.

The court ordered him to pay a total of £772.00, which included a fine, contribution towards costs and victim surcharge.

A council spokesperson says: “Over 15 per cent of properties on Anglesey are rented from private landlords. All landlords have a duty to ensure their properties are fit to live in, and we will take action when we find this basic duty or prohibition orders, like in his case, are being breached.”
