Almost 50% off licensing cost in council’s early-bird offer

One of London’s most aggressive landlord licensing regimes says it has an early-bird offer running until July 14.

Landlords applying for Newham council’s Selective Licence by that date will pay an early-bird discount fee of £400 – a saving of £350 on the full price of £750.

Selective licences are required for all residential accommodation that is not a Mandatory or Additional HMO in every ward in the borough except for Stratford Olympic Park and Royal Victoria.

The latest Selective Licensing scheme started on June 1 and - in the words of the council - “helps to ensure that privately-rented homes are well managed and of a good standard.”

Newham’s last Licensing Scheme, which expired at the end of February 2023, saw 42,000 properties licensed – of which 70 per cent were apparently subject to officer visits or audits.

Since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, an average of 800 licensing compliance inspections have been undertaken in the borough each month to check on property conditions, safety and management.
