The National Residential Landlords Association is reminding landlords who electronically handle personal information to pay their annual fee to the Information Commissioner’s Office.

The ICO is the regulator for data protection and landlords need to pay the fee if they store personal information on a computer or phone or use CCTV. Failure to comply could see them fined up to £4,000.

However ICO fees have risen by almost 30% and for organisations with 10 or fewer employees (defined as micro-organisations), the charge is up from £40 to £52 a year and for small to medium sized organisations, from £60 to £78.

The NRLA says it believes most landlords need to register with the ICO.
