A council says it’s won funds to launch a project against what it calls “unscrupulous” landlords in the private sector.

Bury council is undertaking a pathfinder project – funded by the Greater Manchester Combined Authority – which could mean rogue landlords being fined up to £30,000 for various offences.

So far, the project has resulted in two private landlords being hit with penalties of £23,000 and £10,000 for putting tenants at risk from unsafe housing conditions.

The larger penalty relates to an electrical installation in a private rented property which was immediately dangerous and could have posed a risk of fatal electrocution to the tenants or visitors to the property.

A council spokesperson says: “The vast majority of landlords provide safe and decent accommodation for Bury tenants. However, a small number of unscrupulous landlords fail to maintain properties or carry out essential safety checks such as electrical and gas.

“Some also let properties with serious hazards which could put tenants’ health and safety at risk. We will not hesitate to take action against landlords who do not co-operate in bringing these homes up to standard, using these tough new civil penalties of up to £30,000 where appropriate.”

Any landlord who needs advice on their obligations can contact the council on 0161 253 5000.
