Rental homes found built with plywood and cardboard, along with dangerous electrical wiring and no proper bathroom or toilet, have been demolished by a council.

It follows a routine visit by Harrow council officers which uncovered a shocking network of illegally occupied outbuildings behind a property in Edgware, north London.

During inspections, housing enforcement officers found three makeshift outbuildings rented out despite posing serious risks to life including serious fire hazards, unsafe electrics, and exposure to excess cold due to extremely poor insulation and weatherproofing.

With the site continuing to operate in clear disregard for housing law and the Emergency Prohibition Order, officers say they had no option but to order for the demolition of the illegal outbuildings which took place this week.

A council spokesperson says: “No one should ever live like this. 

“What our officers found was appalling and we are grateful to officers acting swiftly to put an end to the use of these illegal outbuildings. 

“We will continue to take action against anyone putting lives at risk. 

“Residents are encouraged to report suspected illegal or unsafe accommodation so the Council can act quickly.”

The cost of the emergency works, totalling £7,500, will be recovered from the property. 

The occupants were supported by the council to secure suitable alternative accommodation in the private sector.
