Universal credit has made this problem worse. I always rented to Housing benefit claimants but you can not work with Universal credit. They don't have a form for direct payments to private landlords & they are very unhelpful. If they had a online form like my Council I would be more likely to start taking tenants on benefits again. They also put a tenant on direct payment to him when they were moved onto Universal credit even when the Council were paying direct to landlord because he has a drug addiction. How stupid is that .

Just another money grabbing scheme by a Council that already has the power to act against landlords that rent poor quality properties. Why penalise good landlords who will now have less money to invest in their properties. Prity stupid & short sighted.

My biggest problem is Universal credit. I have worked with Barnsley Councils Housing Benefits team for years with few problems but I can not take people on Universal credit anymore as the system is a shambles. Give control back to the people who now what they are doing. I am now in the process of reducing my portfolio due to this.

When you have a housing benefits system that works ( Barnsley councils works very well ) would you design one that doesn't work. If you did that in private industry you would be looking for a new job. I have 4 tenants on universal credit & all in rent arrears. I have just received direct payment for one after 20 weeks. The reason I know it is for him is I know his national insurance number. Can you believe they don't even put the tenants name on the payment. The 20 weeks owed by him he bought drugs with. He was on direct payments to landlord on housing benefit so why was he moved onto direct payment to tenant on universal credit when he told them he has a drug addiction. I understand his dealer is happy & I don't think he pays tax. My advice is to stay away from Universal Credit as it needs a lot of changes before it is fit for purpose.

The system is a shambles. They should contact Barnsley councils Housing Benefits team for advice on to make it work as their system is fit for purpose. I am not taking any tenants that are on Universal credit now as I have 4 on it 3 of which are in rent arrears. One who has a drug addiction has finally been put on direct payment after 20 weeks. ( I don't suppose his dealer will have paid tax on the rent money he spent with him ). Direct payment to tenant has been tried before about 12 years ago & it did not work for a lot of tenants who are on direct payments to landlord now. When they are moved onto Universal credit this should automatically stay in place.
