Absolutely - the grossly excessive Civil Penalties, for minor paperwork infringements unrelated to safety, need to be curtailed. You could drive without a licence and wouldn't get fined anywhere near the range £20k to £300k. Landlords clearly should not be abused to fund the entire council.

Franklin I, profit is not tax-deductible.

Incorrect for sure. It's amazing how different HMRC employees have very different opinions - and it isn't supposed to be a matter of opinion. I've certainly had tax charged in the past and found out later that the investigator was wrong. It's worth looking at the definitive sources yourself and arming yourself with the facts. Look at the HMRC manuals online to get the exact guidance that HMRC agents receive and should work by, and .gov.uk webpages for the law.

It's a crying shame that these irresponsible individuals lead to punishment of all landlords the vast majority of whom do their best for their tenants in often difficult and cash-strapped circumstances. It's a pity that the government's latest punitive grabs of tax from landlords will only make the situation worse.

Absolutely correct James. It's about time that communities began to realise that holding landlords to blame for just about every property-related problem - anti-social behaviour by tenants, rising house prices. Tenants are citizens with their own responsibilities, and councils and neighbours should address any issues to them directly; the landlord has no greater power over them. Similarly, property investors never push prices up - they push prices downward to the realistic level where the price reflects the money that people are prepared to pay to live in the property; it is owner-occupiers who push prices up to unrealistic levels. If they blame the wrong people then the "solutions" won't work.

First time buyers don't pay Capital Gains Tax which landlords do every time they sell.

I predict a mass class action by evicted tenants, landlords, letting agents, estate agents and many Landlords get no "tax relief" on mortgage interest - they get only same right as every other business in the world, to deduct from their gross income all expenses necessarily incurred in generating that income before calculating their profit. Withdrawing that basic human right not to be taxed on profit you haven't made is a travesty of justice, and it will cost tenants, landlords, and all others in the property sector very dear. It should be scrapped or at least made non-retrospective..

These are the landlords who get us all a bad name and lead to ever more regulation and tax grabs.
